Fp Growth and Scaling Association Rules
The one idea: Apriori prunes candidates level by level, but it still has to generate every surviving candidate itemset explicitly and rescan the transaction data to count each one — with a large item catalog, that candidate generation step alone becomes the bottleneck, even with downward-closure pruning doing its job. FP-Growth skips candidate generation entirely: it compresses the transactions into a tree once, then reads frequent itemsets directly out of the tree's structure. Same output, same support/confidence/lift math from the Apriori lesson — a fundamentally different, and far cheaper, way of getting there.
⚠️ The trap: "FP-Growth is faster than Apriori" is true, but it's easy to walk away thinking FP-Growth is a different clustering of the same idea — a slightly better implementation detail. It isn't a detail. The reason Apriori struggles isn't the pruning logic (both algorithms share the identical downward-closure insight) — it's that Apriori must materialize and count every candidate itemset that survives pruning, one database scan per level, while FP-Growth never generates a candidate itemset at all. If you can't explain what a "candidate" is and why avoiding it matters, you haven't actually understood the scaling difference — you've just memorized which algorithm to name-drop for big data.
The Apriori lesson built frequent itemsets and association rules from a 10-transaction, 6-item grocery dataset — small enough that even brute-force checking of all 63 possible itemsets would have been fine. Real retail catalogs have thousands to tens of thousands of items, and even after Apriori's downward-closure pruning throws out doomed candidates, generating and counting the ones that survive can still be slow. FP-Growth is the algorithm built specifically…
