Industries with high barriers to entry, low buyer power, low supplier power, few substitutes, and low rivalry (e.g., regulated utilities, branded consumer staples) tend to produce higher and more sustainable margins than industries with the opposite characteristics (e.g., commodity airlines, contract manufacturing). The industry life cycle provides a temporal dimension to competitive analysis.
