# SAT Reading — Main Idea and Purpose Questions ## What These Questions Are Asking Main idea and purpose questions show up in the Reading and Writing section of the Digital SAT — the current adaptive format as of 2023. The Reading and Writing section consists of two 32-minute modules (64 minutes total, 54 questions). The total SAT score scale is 400–1600. Main idea and purpose questions are among the most common question types in Module 1 and Module 2 of the Reading and Writing section. Common question stems: - "Which choice best states the main idea of the text?" - "What is the main purpose of the text?" - "Which choice best describes the overall structure of the text?" These sound simple, but they're tricky because the wrong answers are often true but too narrow (they describe one detail, not the whole point) or too broad (they go beyond what the passage actually says). ## The Golden Rule: Stay in the Text On the SAT, the correct answer must be supported by the passage itself. Never bring in outside knowledge. Never assume what the author "probably" meant. Your job is to find the answer that matches what the text actually says and does. ## How to Find the Main Idea 1.
