Common in insulation, floor tiles, ceiling tiles, roof shingles, and pipe insulation in homes built before 1980. Health risk: Asbestos fibers, when inhaled, can cause serious lung diseases including mesothelioma, asbestosis, and lung cancer. Types: - Non-friable asbestos: Intact, solid, and not releasing fibers — considered lower risk; does not need to be removed if undisturbed - Friable asbestos: Crumbling, deteriorating, or damaged — releases fibers into the air; must be remediated Requirements: Federal and state law require asbestos abatement before demolition or major renovation.
